Now they were over the top of the cliffs and in a few minutes the valley land of Narnia had sunk out of sight behind them. They were flying over a wild country of steep hills and dark forests, still following the course of the river. The really big mountains loomed ahead. But the sun was now in the travellers 8217; eyes and they couldn 8217;t see things very clearly in that direction. For the sun sank lower and lower till the western sky was all like one great furnace full of melted gold; and it set at last behind a jagged peak which stood up against the brightness as sharp and flat as if it were cut out of cardboard.

8220;And my wings are beginning to ache, 8221; said Fledge. There 8217;s no sign of the valley with a Lake in it, like what Aslan said. What about coming down and looking out for a decent spot to spend the night in? We shan 8217;t reach that place tonight. 8221;

8220;Yes, and surely it 8217;s about time for supper? 8221; said Digory.

So Fledge came lower and lower. As they came down nearer to the earth and among the hills, the air grew warmer and after travelling so many hours with nothing to listen to but the beat of Fledge 8217;s wings, it was nice to hear the homely and earthy noises again 8211; the chatter of the river on its stony bed and the creaking of trees in the light wind. A warm, good smell of sun-baked earth and grass and flowers came up to them. At last Fledge alighted. Digory rolled off and helped Polly to dismount. Both were glad to stretch their stiff legs.

The valley in which they had come down was in the heart of the mountains; snowy heights, one of them looking rosered in the reflections of the sunset, towered above them.

8220;I am hungry, 8221; said Digory.

8220;Well, tuck in, 8221; said Fledge, taking a big mouthful of grass. Then he raised his head, still chewing and with bits of grass sticking out on each side of his mouth like whiskers, and said, 8220;Come on, you two. Don 8217;t be shy. There 8217;s plenty for us all. 8221;

8220;H 8217;m, h 8217;m, 8221; said Fledge, speaking with his mouth full. 8220;Well 8211; h 8217;m 8211; don 8217;t know quite what you 8217;ll do then. Very good grass too. 8221;

Polly and Digory stared at one another in dismay.
波莉和迪格雷神情沮丧地面面相觑。
8220;Well, I do think someone might have arranged about our meals, 8221; said Digory.

8220;I 8217;m sure Aslan would have, if you 8217;d asked him, 8221; said Fledge.

8220;Wouldn 8217;t he know without being asked? 8221; said Polly.

8220;I 8217;ve no doubt he would, 8221; said the Horse (still with his mouth full). 8220;But I 8217;ve a sort of idea he likes to be asked. 8221;

8220;But what on earth are we to do? 8221; asked Digory.
“那我们到底该怎么办？”迪格雷问。
8220;I 8217;m sure I don 8217;t know, 8221; said Fledge. 8220;Unless you try the grass. You might like it better than you think. 8221;

8220;Oh, don 8217;t be silly, 8221; said Polly, stamping her foot. 8220;Of course humans can 8217;t eat grass, any more than you could eat a mutton chop. 8221;

8220;For goodness 8217; sake don 8217;t talk about chops and things, 8221; said Digory. 8220;It only makes it worse. 8221;
